Google has finally begun altering search results even for people not signed into their Google account. This has been in the works for a while but is now implemented live. This begins the next generation in search results: user variable. The question to ask now is: will this form of search stay? Google’s been moving toward this for some time. They hope to produce even more geographically and user relevant search results. In order for them to stay three steps in front of tomorrow’s next competitor, this is really where things have to go.
In Google’s own words:
When possible, Google will customize your search results based on location and/or recent search activity. Additionally, when you’re signed in to your Google Account, you may see even more relevant, useful results based on your web history.
At http://www.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=93704 , Google states:
Recent searches: We take into account whether a particular query followed on the heels of another query. Because recent search activity provides valuable context for understanding the meaning behind your searches, we use it to customize your results whenever possible, regardless of whether you’re signed in or signed out. In order to customize your results and show you the customization details, we keep the most recent query on your browser for a limited time. After that, the information is removed from your browser and disappears immediately if you close your browser.
